My new banjo....

Posted by Renaissance_Kira on Sunday, July 8, 2007

It just seems appropriate to have my first blog be about my new banjo.  His name is "Phineas"--in our family we name our instruments.  "Crazy!" you say?  Well, maybe.  All I can do is quote Ma Ingalls: "It takes all kinds of people to make up a world."  -- Caroline Ingalls in The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder (I think).

Phineas is a Bart Reiter Standard.  I bought him from BHO's own Spoefish.  It was a great experience shopping-wise.  the banjo is in great shape, really like new.  Spoefish had changed the tuning-peg buttons from the original ones to really cool vintage ones (the pegs themselves are unchanged).  After playing the frosted head for a while I changed changed it to fiberskyn head.  I like the sound a lot better.  It's much "plunkier" which is a good thing--to me.

Awesome! I am so craving a better banjo and that is one that would be great for me too. I'm saving my pennies but for now it's my Harmony Reso-Tone longneck that I got off Craigslist for $75.

I like the name idea. Perhaps I can call mine "Stretch" or "Skinny" or "John" (as in "long john").

Congrats on the purchase. Post some sound files when you can!

Hey, cool!  It's nice to hear I'm not the only one that names banjos!  I have a custom Griffin banjo with her nameplate in mother of pearl on the fretboard.  Her name is 'Beauty'.  My other banjo, a Chuck Lee, is named 'Angeline' mainly because of the angel on the peghead and because that's the name of my favorite tune I play.    Have fun with your new banjo!
