Online Arse Syndrome?

Posted by Banjophobic on Friday, April 19, 2013

like this

seems like lately the net is rife with folks who just want to be an 'arse' when replying to folks threads. Whats up with this? If someone breaks a string, then suddenly the person 'must not know how to change a string', or 'they always buy bad strings'. Now if someone uses a tuner or talks about using one, it indicates something is 'wrong' with you or your banjo.

This 'attitude' thingy on forums is getting pretty rampant. If you dont reply to someone's post exactly like they wish you too, or they don't get them exactly  the answer they hoped for,  you are immediately chewed up and spit out and called names. Its getting pretty bad...or is it me being hyper sensitive? With all the stuff going on with my mom's health and losing some friends to cancer recently, maybe it is just me...

Well, that one guy you're thinking of was 'unstable' to put it kindly. I think it's mostly a case of people having personal issues, then they bring those issues with them into the forum and all hell breaks loose...
Sorry to hear about your mom, hope all is well with her soon!

It's not just you, I have questions (sometimes I can find answers too) but I don't ask them here for the very reasons you have mentioned.

That's why I rarely reply to threads. Besides not knowing much, you can't even ask a question without people getting their panties in a twist. That is also why I don't do jams. The tuner thread thing is actually an example of a broader trend.

Couldn't agree more john. There's a lot of basic rudeness about these days and it pisses me off

If people get too rude and don't follow rules, they are locked out -- as was the person you're referring to. He was warned, didn't heed the warning.

Unfortunately, we can't just lock someone out the first time they act improperly, we do have to wait and see if it was just an abberation or if that preson is just a jerk.

I've noticed that too...someone starts a thread asking for opinions, but if you express an opinion they don't want to hear, then look out...

I honestly thought this was a post about getting a sore bottom from sitting down too long in front of the computer!

Gareth - I'm with you. Reminds me of the shirt I got from my daughter for Christmas, "Being A Good Banjo Player Is 3% Talent And 97% Not Being Distracted By The Internet." Why is it that those close to us believe we need to make such statements? Although I for one can tell you that I would not be anywhere near as far along learning the banjo without you all here on BHO.

John - sorry to go off topic. I agree - we need to stay focused on our objective - helping each other out. Kudos to the moderators for instilling a bit of discipline when necessary, in a pleasant (if you can call it that) way that keeps the peace on BHO.

I've been fortunate to find BHO. As a beginner, I probably ask questions that some may think stupid. So far I have had great responses from this community and none from the nay sayers. I don't believe the bad could ever overtake the good on this site. Thank you and all the others for the help I receive daily on BHO.

rudeness is really not anything new around here,i remember once someone said having a tuner proved you would always be mediocre,if he comes back around saying that i'll get him a picture of Alan Munde with one clipped on his banjo.
I called out what i believed to be rude once and many claimed i was doing so in self interest,so i left for a year to prove i didn't need to have all that space for my own postings, and shortly there after Eric expanded the video page by ten videos
.I think net posting has ignored traditional salutations and that is not a good thing. To go into someone else's post and uninvited sell your wares seems rude,or posting a link to some one else's version is rude, however i have not seen this in awhile.
If you post on someone else's thread and you are more or less strangers a little bit of greeting would certainly be a good idea.I have seen people go to a mp3 thread post a link to their favorite version not say a word otherwise, that is a complete disrespect for politeness. definitely an oxygen thief in my book -Tom

John, I don't really think it is a syndrome. I believe it is more like a persons natural personality coming out.... Did you ever have a 98lb kid in school that would run his mouth until someone bigger finally put him in his place, then he would run to his Mom crying that the bullys were picking on him? I think that is some of what we are experiencing. Some people just being people.

On a side note, we will keep your mother in our prayers for a speedy recovery to her health and prayers of comfort to you and the families of the friends that you have lost.

And today I got called 'a liar' for not reading a guys post like he thought it should be read....wow. He's pretty much like this on any thread, to anyone. I try to be nice and even used a big smiley face in the post. Oh well, just more arse syndrome reflecting the persons personality I guess.

Yep John, there appear's to be a lot of really nasty, rude people on here these day's. Personally i have cut my BHO time right down, and to be quite honest, i am not missing being insulted, or called a bully for deffending myself. Stick with it John you are one of the good guy's. :-)

John, I've noticed that some people just look for an argument or an opportunity to parade their (supposedly) superior knowledge, at someone else's expense. You and many others on this board have generously shared your knowledge of the banjo and have been an enormous help to a great many people in their quest to learn to play. I for one appreciate all you guys ( and gals) do to make this board a better and more informative place to visit.

Sorry to hear that your mom is having health problems. I will remember her in prayer.

ICANN needs to recognize an official sarcasm font for use on the intrawebs.
