Another Playing Critique sought

Posted by cbskibum on Saturday, April 6, 2013

Hello All,

After following Heath's and Pcfives lead, and seeing all the great advice I saw them get from so many experienced and great players I've decided to throw my hat in to the ring as well.

And would love to hear what all of you have to say, what I'm doing right or what I'm doing wrong. I know my banjo is missing something and I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Like Heath and PC5 I've been playing for 5 years. Up until Dec I mostly memorized arrangements. Mostly memorized about 50 fiddle tunes from Tony's master book and probably as many Scruggsy type tunes. In December of this year I started working with Pat Cloud's books and I'm trying to incorporate some of that into my playing, Improvising and listening a lot more.

I play at a bluegrass jam regularly on Tuesday nights and I also play with a few guys I met at a music workshop I met here in Seattle. The name of the "Band" is The Bluegrass Ryders which to tell you the truth I'm not that psyched about the name, because it really isn't bluegrass. There is an electric guitar. Our lead guy is a rock vocalist and to him this is Bluegrass. When I objected I was overridden but it is related. Nine Pound hammer is "pretty" straight up. And Shady Grove is a song I learned that day. I say "band" because we because we just got our first gig at Folklife festival on Memorial Day.

I uploaded a few songs to my profile today that we recorded while we  practiced on Thursday to have some sound files on my profile for you all to listen to. I played about average for me. Some days I play better some a lot worse. I play with a fishman pickup and an active DI, because the room we play in gets really loud that we practice. When I was playing into the mic we couldn't hear the banjo in recordings. So excuse the weird sound.

I would appreciate any feedback about how to get my banjo to sound better and things I need to work on. Some of the songs are played a little too fast for me to hit all the notes as cleanly as I would like. Like I said I'm not the guy in charge I'm just trying to go with the flow the best I can.

Thanks in Advance,
