Help the Banjo Hangout community crowdsource a definitive list of Doc Watson's banjo playing. Join the discussion thread at http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/259247. Check out the spreadsheet and help us get it updated. At this point I think we are getting pretty close as far as a comprehensive listing from his studio and regularly released albums. The hard work will be updating the tunings for each song and noting the playing style. We have a few in there, but there is more work to do.
I came up with the idea last weekend while listening to a vinyl record (remember those things!) of Red Rocking Chair. Doc's playing on Mole in the Ground and Merle's version of Red Rocking Chair both knocked my out of my seat. It has been a while since I listened to the album and I guess I just forgot those tunes were on there -- which got me wondering what other banjo gems were lurking in Doc's many regular recording releases. Take a look at the list -- there are MANY of them.
Once we get the list into decent shape I plan to update the Wikipedia listing for Doc and start a new page dedicated to Doc and Merle's banjo playing. On the David Holt recording Doc is pretty humble about his banjo pickin' -- but let's help spread the word on just how good he really was. Check out the forum and help us get the full discography.
