I guess I have abandoned my quest to end the hegemony of the Guitar. I bought two last month. I didn't think my 9-year-old son would take up the banjo, but he might pick up guitar. So I started combing Craig's list. First I bought a beat up old Alvarez for $50. It's a full dreadnaught size and I didn't think my son could get his arm around it, and once I cleaned it up I really liked it. So when I saw a pristine 1/2 size Austin come up for $30. I bought that too. So now we're learning together and he seems in to it.
I can change between about 4 cords and I'm working on strumming patterns. I hate to admit it, but I really like it. I am justifying this by telling myself that learning guitar will make me a better banjo player. So if I practice guitar a while, I always try to pick up the Buckeye before I wrap up.
The goal is one day my son will play guitar and I'll follow along on banjo. Now if I could get the 5-year-olds to play the ukes I bought them last year instead of hitting each other with them we might really accomplish something.
