Snakewood Special

Posted by Tim Sander on Sunday, January 6, 2013

I've had the Roy Smith Snakewood Special home with me for almost a month now. It is a joy just to pick up and look at.  We've got a bit of rework to do on the brass hardware and the nut, but aside from that it's amazing.  Playing it is a joy, too.  Sweet tone and clear.  Easy to play, moving up the neck is almost frictionless.  I can't believe the finish.  Once we finish the hardware work, I'll see about doing a photo layout.

Tim & I play music on Wednesday nights and his banjo sounds as good as it looks.!

The rework on the flange by Bill Rickard was excellent and it now has a brass plated steel flange replacing the original solid brass flange. Roy also recut the ebony nut more to my liking and I'm loving it. Just wanted to bring this up to date. I'm currently considering replacing the Pegheds tuners with something that works a bit more smoothly and evenly. I'm also toying with the idea of putting a goatskin head on it.
