I guess I would say if you asked me 2 years ago if I would be happy playing the way I am playing now I would definitely sign up in a heart beat ! I guess now I am looking for more, I practice about 5 to 6 times a week , sometimes an hour , sometimes more depending on how the Yankees are doing, because I like to play in front of the TV. I don't really have anyone to jam with on a regular basis simply because no one I know plays any Bluegrass on a regular basis, but I do play along with Mark Becks MP3 tracks and the amazing slow downer, again I say this all the time some days better than others which scares me to play in front of an audience but some day I will do an open mike night down the street from my house. I have played in front of people at a party and I was just playing by myself no other instruments and people were digging it and I had just the right amount of beer in me any more (drunk) and I cant play yes I figured out that I cant play that well DRUNK!! How long do you figure it would take to play Bluegrass Breakdown pretty decent I guess maybe another year.I am happy with my playing I guess I just need to be more patient.Keep on pick'n folks.

Amen, It's 2 years for me this month........I can play more confident now, I know around 30 -35 tunes pretty well. But I'm still too chicken to go to open mic. It's getting close to the time to try, though. My Brother-in-law just move to town. He's a pro mandolin player (and Drummer). wants to get something going. So, push is coming to shove.
I think another year is required (at least), but it helps to have people to play with and push you out of your comfort zone.
As long as I have good players around me, I can get by. But if I'm the main player, yikes! I need more T. O. I... (Time On Instrument).
I think this is when you really need to step it up and not get complacent, It really takes 5 years (most say) to get proficient, but I'm sure it's different for everyone. Happy trails, it's cool that we have the hangout.

that's funny I've been playing a little more because the O's are still alive in the playoffs... one of us is gonna start playing a little less next week and I hope it's not me ;)
