Banjo Quest

I've decided to end my banjo deprivation.  No, I haven't found a job yet, nor a place to live. What I have decided to do is begin a quest to replace my lost banjos one piece at a time (Johnny Cash is my inspiration).

I lusted for a Goya classical guitar from 1971 to 2003. I finally found a wrecked one, collected parts for it and rebuilt it.  I figure I can do the same thing I did  with the Goya, collecting banjo parts until I have enough parts to build a banjo with.  I collected enough parts to build an 8 inch Newtonian reflector telescope that way too and only have to spend a few bucks at a time for the parts.

I bought a wrecked Goya with the bridge ripped off for $29. I just found a bridge that covered the damaged places on the top.

Someone gave me an 8 inch telescope mirror. With the telescope, I bought lenses for the eyepieces from a surplus place for twenty bucks and built some really nice eyepieces out of PVC, copper tubing and pipe end caps. I would have had to pay hundreds for lenses that nice.

My banjo may wind up looking like Johnny Cash's 1959, 60,61,62,63,64 Cadillac, but I don't care.  I really like doing it this way.

My fingers are getting twinges of arthritis and I want to have as many years of playing as I can squeeze in before I take the long voyage to Valhalla.

So, in the tradition of my Celtic ancestors. I am announcing the start of my Quest to collect all the pieces of the Banjo of Destiny!  Today I begin my voyage upon the vasty deep to the island of eBay, the Banjohangout classifieds, garage sales, flea markets, antique shops and the darkest corners of the Internet.

I've got two sets of cryogenically treated banjos strings, a banjo capo and a plans for a cookie tin banjo (in case I have to make the neck myself).

So wish me bon voyage.  Banjo adventure awaits..

try Goodwills online auctions and be sure to ask questions of whatever banjo you see. I've gotten some good ukes & stuff from them!
