John:
The Japanese are capable of building very fine musical instruments, and many parts for banjos are made in Asia. The banjo is after all a pretty simple piece of work. A really good banjo is something else. As a beginner you probably want a learner instrument. Gold Tone is a good starting place for dependable quality fair-priced banjos and you can choose between b;ue-grass and old time- one of the first forks in the road. A good blue grass banjo will cost more than an old-time open back and the budget models will fall short of expectations but there are some really good ones out there, like the Epiphones made for Gibson.
