Let the Hack and Slash Commence

Posted by skoobee on Sunday, July 22, 2012

So 20th August is E-Day - the day the surgeon takes a knife to my damaged lateral epicondyle tendon to try and rid me of the Tennis Elbow.

Being the National Health Service (and free) I have a pot-luck of 1 of 3 surgeons working that day.  2 of them do a keyhole procedure, one de-briding the damaged tissue (Shaving it away from the healthy stuff) and slackening off the tendon with a small incision; the second almost identical but using an ultrasonic probe to emulsify and aspirate the area to remove the damaged tissue (sounds delightful!)

The third seems to be a little more 'agricultural' and old-skool!  3-5" incision in area, followed by excision of the damaged tissue and a small incision in the tendon to slacken off the tension.

I'm hoping number 3 is on holiday that day, but to be honest, I'll take anything that solves the problem.  The surgeon reckons that the prognosis is excellent, with a smart aftercare routine leading to 85% success rate (no re-occurrence within 4 years).  Then again, they're hardly likely to tell me it's pointless!

Can't grumble really.  I'd give a small piece of my right arm to get a decent night's sleep again!

For now, I'm off to France for a spell.  For the first time, without my Banjer as (to be honest) I can't really play it at the moment!  Should be interesting - what am I gonna do to scare the natives away now?

Scary stuff Adam. I hope whoever you get does a good job, cures you of your painful ailment and makes playing your banjo comfortable again.

Thanks Guy!

I had the pre-surgery 'informed consent' meeting with my surgeon today and its going to be the hack-and-slash merchant for me. An 3-5" incision and 7-10 days of physio before I'm allowed to pick anything up, and 6 weeks of light duties after that!

And do you know what? I can't wait! If all it's going to take is a couple of months more not playing, to get back plying regularly, I'll take it!

Hi Adam
Have they given you a date yet? Meanwhile I hope it all goes well.
I'll be down your neck of the woods in a few weeks at the Cornish Bluegrass Festival.
It'd be great to see you there if you're fit enough and it's not too far.
All the best
Guy

Hey Guy, It's this Monday coming when I'm having the op, so I'll probably not be making plans to go this year. You should hook up with Tom Robarts on here - the man from Redruth, whose usually at the CBF. Genuinely nice guy and Clawhammer talent!

Let's hope the weather is a LOT better than it is right now for it! Have fun, and enjoy Kernow!

Adam

Hi Adam
Good luck with the operation, I'll be thinking of you. It's a shame I won't get to meet in September but it is better that you get this thing done and sorted so that you can move on with your life.
I'll see if I can connect with Tom, I can't say I know him but then I'm more of a 3 finger player than clawhammer although I like both and think of them as equal skills in their own right.
I had a go at clawhammer over Christmas but I'm really a beginner and haven't had much chance to practise as yet.
Please let us know how you get on.
Best regards
Guy
