lovin' my new banjo

Posted by Max Sand on Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Okay, so i was gonna say lovin' my new axe, but perhaps that terminology is only used for guitar.  Anyway, bought an old 70's Ruby made right here in Toronto. It's got that magic sound and i can't put it down. "Even got a blister on my little finger, maybe on my thumb".  Also lovin' playing clawhammer and slowly but surely getting better at drop thumbing, double thumbing and playing in double C and G modal.  Yep, another year from now and i'll be getting ready for the big time lol. Working on some old time tunes with my teacher and might be ready to post a video in about two months. You heard it here first!

So Max, how did you find your new banjo? Sounds like you're in love - will be looking forward to the video!

Hey Deb, believe it or not it was either Craigslist or Kijiji. Lots of coincidences followed. The guy i bought it off of lives in a town north of Toronto and he restored it. So when we got to talking we found we had a connection through my banjo teacher. The seller plays in a pipe band and my teacher's girlfriends father is also in that band and these guys are buddies. Then I bring the banjo to Bruce Dowd a well known luthier here in Toronto for a modification. Bruce is one of the guys who used to make these Ruby banjos back in the '70's. So Bruce is showing me a banjo that has a scoop out on the neck for clawhammer style and.....the banjo he is showing me .......belongs to my banjo teacher. Weird or what!
