Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers were in Charlottesville Saturday nite, June 2, 2012. It was sold out. They played much of what was on the CD, The Crow. Though Martin mentioned the band backing him on his recordings, I can't find any mention of them on the Crow. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert, he is quite a banjoist. Those folks who might have come to hear pure old blue grass may have been a bit disappointed....there was no old timey folksy songs like you'd hear at a country folk fest. Steve played a lot of Scruggs style and clawhammer as well. I was amused when he tried to explain to the audience the difference, most looked like they'd rather be looking down the bottom of their PBR. They did the song about the atheists, that was good, Steve sang so loud on his parts, you could hear him all the way to the University. The Rangers themselves were super..great harmonizing, and altho the banjo player, Sharp, I think, was seldom spotlighted, he did have some solos that were terrific.
