About my 60s Framus banjo

Posted by erstokke on Sunday, June 10, 2007

The banjo has an aluminium tone-ring (or at least a hoop).

It has a heavy star-shaped top-tension hoop. That was once a $1000 option on a Stelling!

Home-made wooden armrest - very comfortable.

It had a real calfskin head, but when I was unable to tighten the head anymore because the hoop of the head touched the neck, I have changed to a Stew-Mac 5 Star head. I first tried an Elite head, but the hoop was too small. The 5 Star really brightened up the sound. I have no idea to how much head tension I should have, but I just put it where the low tone resonance stopped and the ringing started.

Honestly, this is not a very good banjo, but it was cheap!

Update: I have now posted two sound files. You might notice that it sounds more like a clawhammer banjo than a bluegrass banjo.

I have a Framus, too, but it has a shiny plastic head that has Framus printed on it. No birdie, either!

Seems you have the birdie on the arm, while I had the birdie on the head! Originally mine had a shiny plastic head as well, but I changed it sometimes in the 70s.
