There is 286 days until Christmas! Yeah, yeah I know!
I say this because I started WAY TOO LATE learning Christmas songs for last Christmas. For some of you October is plenty early....but for me it did not work out. So this year...throughout the year...I am going to be learning Christmas songs.
I have new motivation. Not only do I want to play my banjo at Christmas, but I want to be able to play with other people.
In my church I have some incredible musicians. I have a fellow BHO member...Stan Toney. (Except he is moving cross conuntry this fall!) But there are others Roy (guitar), Andy (electric bass....he really needs an upright bass), Roger (guitar...true Bluegrass lover) and his brother Charlie (fiddle...who is not yet coming to church). Not to mention Bill (harmonica) or even Ed (drummer). My dream has been to pull these guys together for a special number on a Sunday.
Then in my family I have my wife Pam (piano, ukelele) and son Caleb (tenor saxaphone, piano and recorder). Then this Christmas season we will be in California for my wife's brother's wedding before on December 21. His wife-to-be has a daughter who is one of the most gifted musicians I have seen - Katy (she plays a mean mandolin). I have already set it as a goal to jam with her at Christmas when we are together.
So as you can see I have a goal to learn as many Christmas songs as I can BEFORE Christmas. Lord willing, I will be able to jam with a few people!
As you can see from my previous post I have 20 other songs I want to play well at the end of the year. So I have my hands full.
I think someone from BHO said that they play Christmas songs all year. Another person on a forum posting said that he things beginners ought to start out on Christmas songs.
Here is a funny thing that happened to me...I had worked up one Christmas song - "Joy to The World" and I wanted to play it Christmas Eve. So I was practicing it at church and a person from the church was in the sanctuary when I was practicing. I went through the song pretty well and was feeling pretty good about it. I asked the person, "What do you think?" He replied, "That one will be ready for next year!" I said to myself, "well, I guess now I know." Too funny! (And to be honest I was bummed!)
Merry Christmas!

James,
You are so right about starting early. This past Christmas I had ordered special Christmas music for my tenor sax and clarinet, but with just one month to prepare, I came up short and wasn't ready. I won't make that same mistake this year - especially with my new banjo.
Cheers,
Steve

Good thinking! I always start around September, and sometimes feel like I just barely make it on some of the songs! The best part of committing to Christmas songs, is that they never go out of style! (as opposed to say learning the latest popular country song etc)

Man, that was cold on the part of your fellow church member. :) I share your desires brother. It's funny how one can think that one's thoughts and desires are unique, only to log into BHO and discover you're in the exact same boat as a lot of other people. I can see it now... having my wife and kids gathered by the fireplace this Christmas eve trying to pretend they are entertained as I play them a few tunes! lol

Nice to be able to associate with other good players both inside and outside of the family. I had hoped to post some Christmas music too but never got to it so I'll have to start early too.
