I just had my first lesson...

Posted by kc8tby on Monday, March 12, 2012

I just had my first lesson yesterday morning and I never knew there was so much I was doing wrong!  LOL!  Seriously though, I am very glad to have finally begun to work with a teacher and I really am looking forward to continuing on in my banjo education!

To anyone else out there in banjo land who might be trying to learn on their own, you might want (at some point)  to think about working with an instructor.  In my case, even though I've only had one lesson so far, I have been surprised at how many things I had been doing wrong, (such as improperly fingering the chords, the way I was placing my thumb on, and not under, the neck, etc.)

Deciding to work with a teacher might turn out to be the best decision I ever made!

Take care!

Tom

And the more you interact with a teacher, the more subtle things you'll see that you would miss on your own. Way ahead in the long run.

Hi Thomas.
I also can recognize, what you are writing. Two years I played "by myself learning". In 2008 I were on workshop i Norway. The teacher were Petr Brandejs. I think I must have the same lesson as you....Two fingers on the skin - hold your hand right and so on..and so on..At that time I wished, I have had a teacher from beginning. But here in Denmark, there are not many playing the 5 strings banjo.
But I agree with you. If it`s possible get a teacher before you get to many bad habits.
The best from Torben

I don't like to be the one to revive an old thread, but I fell behind reading posts, so I am getting caught up.
I found a great teacher in Ohio thanks to the BHO. I tried years ago to go solo on the learning. Now 10 years later, I confirmed how beneficial it is to have an experienced player teach me. Hats off to all of you solo beginners, I just lack the musical ability in my DNA to go it alone.
