Not certain about the FB 54 as I own the Korean made Fender FB 58 which is awesome, I believe that manufacturing moved from Korea to china in 1999...2000

Fender FB54 was my first banjo, I played it for about an hour and gave it to my brother. It was junk. I ended up buying a Deering Boston banjo. Save you money till something better comes along.

You could try the Banjo Hut. I'm not saying that the MasterCraft line is any better than most, but for that price you could get a really good banjo (I got my Mastercraft Classic Burled Maple for $479 US) plus their charge for shipping to Europe and some countries overseas is $120. For the price, I have a banjo that will take me well past my learning curve of being a beginner.

I've had a Fender fb 54 for six years and now an Epiphone. I learned on it but was always wanting something that didn't sound like a stick hitting a pillow, as Alfiedog once told me it did :-) $590 is too much unless the majority of that is shipping. Top price in the UK is around ?230 for that Fender. Keep looking. Good luck.

If it's not too late why not consider the Goldtone CC-50. They sell for less than ?200 in the UK and possibly even less in the US, where they are made. Here is a link to their website with a video of Bob Carlin playing one. goldtone.com/products/details/...377/CC-50

Oops, my mistake... they are around ?230 in the UK. From AndyBanjo.com you get a Gig bag, 2 sets of strings, a capo as well as a fifth string spike and a strap, all for ?230 including tax. If you are interested I can find out what it will cost to ship it to SA. Totsiens!
