My Absence

Posted by iSteve on Monday, February 20, 2012

Hello all!

I hope things are going well, and that life's treating you fine.

You may have noticed that I disappeared from the BHO a little before Christmas.  I realized that my wife and I could not work out financing for the banjo I wanted and would not be getting one in time for Christmas.  I stopped posting here because I really wasn't a picker (or even a newbie) because I didn't even have a banjo yet - just a desire to have one.  I thought I ought not to participate until I was officially a part of community - with a banjo actually in hand.

Since Christmas, I have been saving money for a future purchase.  My wife, Lynn, told me today that she hopes that we will work things out for me to get a banjo in time for my birthday - April 21st.  I was elated, to say the least.

The model that I would like to get is the Deering Goodtime 2 Classic 5-String Banjo.  It's offered through Amazon for $549.  It sells from Deering for $909.  It's a good beginner banjo.  I think I would be happy with it.  The only problem is that Amazon is currently out of stock of this particular model.

But today I found a banjo here at the BHO in the classified section.  It's the Deering Goodtime Special Classic Resonator Banjo.  The owner wants to sell it for $500.  A new one from Deering goes for $1,139.  I sent him an email asking some questions about things not contained in the ad.  The thing I like about this model is that it has a steel tone ring - the only Goodtime banjo to have one.

I did get several things that were banjo-related for Christmas - one being The How and the Tao of Old Time Banjo.  I also have the Scruggs book and the Seeger book.  I also have a teacher lined up to help me when I actually do get a banjo.

Well, that's about it.  I'd love to hear from you all.  Comments about my banjo models that I'm interested in would be appreciated.
