Every time I get elated about my progress, there is a let down soon after. After recording myself today I felt like I have been going backwards instead of forwards. Well I guess that's how it goes sometimes. Whenever I start feeling confident I am less careful. At least the recordings always bring me down to earth.
But why can't I hear it while I'm playing?

same here... whenever my banjo gets in front of microphone it never seems to react as well as it did the previous night when I felt it could keep up with the likes of Tony Trischka.
It gets incrementally better. I did a recording project about two years ago and it was a real struggle to get through with anything that made me happy. I've been working on a new project lately and while I might not feel I can capture all my new found skills on tape, I still realize that I'm playing and sounding light years better than I did 2 years. ago.
So I guess what I'm saying is it's just hard to capture your banjo at it's best on a recording, but not to worry... you probably ARE getting better and before you know it, you'll get yourself playing confidently on a recording device.
