Finding a teacher...

Posted by kc8tby on Tuesday, February 14, 2012

I realize that I can only go so far on my own.  I am currently looking for a teacher here in west Michigan and think I have found one!  I will let you all know how I am progressing with his help!

Best to you all!!

Great idea. Lots of good reasons to work with a teacher, at least for a little while. Let us know how you make out.

Where are you in West MI ... I recently moved to FL from Grand Rapids. I may know someone to connect you with.

Tom, another suggestion... Check Alan Munde's website and start with his beginner banjo DVD. You can then progress through his series. Munde uses Tab... The other approach is Murphy Henry. She has an entire series so you can start at the beginning and progress (important to do that with any DVD teacher). I have learned a lot of tunes from these instructional videos. You are getting good "orthodox roll" teachers and learn it right out of the gate. Both have web sites, but their materials are available from Elderly or You can spend $30 and have 6-7 lessons at work at your pace...split screen so you can see both hands.

Resist the temptation to buy DVDs with songs you like and start at the beginning...then all else is built on that.

I don't know Tom, I hear that Banjo Paul is a hack! Hopefully you can learn a few new tricks from that old dog? ;)
