If you've read my previous entries, you may recall that one of my resolutions this new year was to begin playing with others. In Okinawa, I'm in kind of a Bluegrass wasteland (although there is a rather large following on the Japanese Mainland). A chance encounter with someone I work with here yesterday enlightened me to a rumor that another co-worker whose office is right next to mine, may just be a mandolin picker. I checked this morning, and sure enough, he is, in addition to picking dobro, guitar and bass. I informed him that I'm a struggling novice who would like to play with someone, and that I just happened to keep a mandolin (my KM-1000) in my office. My co-worker, Jeff, was so excited, that he put down what he was working on and came over to see this alleged instrument. He took it out of the case and sat in my office and rattled off several great tunes just like that, and vowed to begin bringing in his mandolin and guitar and we will begin a lunchtime jam! Now for the downside: I leave Friday for an extended business trip so it will be several weeks before we can start, but we are both pretty jazzed about it. Just goes to show that you may find someone to play with if you just look around. I am both excited about it, and scared as I've not played with anyone before.
