5th string pip-nut

Posted by Texaspaul on Monday, November 28, 2011

I need to raise the pip to prevent buzzing. Should the string sit on the fret just above the pip?

I say yes, because the half-way point for the harmonic (half-way between the fret and the bridge) should be on the 17th fret.

Lots of people don't like to use the fret because in time you'll wear a groove in the fret and produce buzzing and/or dullness on that fifth string. Pips do cause slight intonation issues, but a lot of banjo setup guys still prefer them.
