Started Lessons

Posted by Mainechowder on Saturday, May 26, 2007

I started my banjo lessons on Wed.. I am taking lessons from a guy that plays bluegrass banjo for a living. He lives on a sailboat on the wharf next to ours, ( where my business is). I heard him playing outside a couple of weeks ago and walked over and introduced myself. He was happy to get me started and teach me some basics. What better place to learn the banjo than sitting outside in Maine on the water. ( We'll have to change our plans come January). I have been practicing about an hour each night. Already can't wait for next Wed. to learn more.

Any pointers or advice out there about starting I would love to hear them.

Thanks for the invite. Also for th' support in beginning.  Wish I had a way to play on our boat. (My wife probably does too!) I suppose I could take my banjo to where I have our sailboat parked in the storage yard, climb up on the trailer, and sit and pick and grin. But I'd rather be on the water. Unfortunately, even the bargain basement moorings in Chicago (where you have to row out in a dinghy, and you collect zebra mussels and hornet's nests on your worthy vessel) are up to about 4 grand a year from the $600 we paid in '97. So I'll have to be a driveway livaeaboard sailor, or else a sandwiches-and-pop day sailor. No banjos on the boat. But we'll be getting there, wherever we play!
