I have a new album that I'll release next week, on Nov 1. It's called Rejoice! A Christmas Album and it features all well known Christmas Carols and one original. It ALSO features loads of banjo and banjola.
I put a sample from the mix on my MUSIC page here at Banjo Hangout. JOY TO THE WORLD has 4 separate banjo tracks in the mix, though it may not be obvious from this quick little MP3 sample ...
I tightened up the head, high tuned it A, capoed 3rd fret to play in C, then squeezed a rag in behind the head and used a flat picj to get a sort of Irish Plectrum Banjo sort of sound for some of the lead work. I also used a gut strung G tuned banjo and played in C for some of the harmony and accompaniment picking - I the high tuned, steel strung banjo tuned to A and capoed 3 to play in C for the "shinier parts" of the arrangement and I played the banjola throughout, in G tuning playing key of C chord forms. It sounds like a lot of banjo, but they each have their place in the mix ... besides, I was looking for a carnival, busy boiling pot of water sort of instrumental - and with the whistles, I think I got it!
Anyway - I'll post details next week after the album is released. I hope you'll take a listen to the MP3.
All the best!
