Fairbanks Imperial Electrics

Posted by ZEPP on Tuesday, November 7, 2006

I happened across a couple of photos which reminded me of a funny happenstance.  In April, 1997, I attended the second Maryland Banjo Academy, and took along my old Fairbanks Electric.

I was playing along in a million-banjo-player jam, when a fellow walked up to me and said "Excuse me, but is that a Fairbanks Electric?"  I snappily replied, "No, it's not just an Electric, but a Fairbanks Imperial Electric no. 0, thank you very much."

He then showed me the banjo he had been holding to the side and said "Cool, so's mine."  In fact, the banjos were nearly identical.  I asked him what his serial number was and he looked inside his banjo and read me the number: 25034.  I gasped and said "Wow!  Mine's 25035!"  (He didn't quite believe that I was obsessive enough to know my serial number without looking, so I had to show him.)

Anyway, we each thought it was super cool that these two, consecutively numbered banjos had met again almost 90 years after their being made, so we posed them and with them while he and an otherwise innocent by-stander roped into service took these photos:

That is too cool!

A friend of mine recently sold a Faribanks Imperial Electric No. 0.  Ther serial number indicated it was from 1904.  Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of that number.  But I did save this photo:
