Dunno 'bout you other guys on the BHO, but I'm getting quite a few enquiries about the banjo from people who've heard about it via the exposure it gets from Mumford & Sons. Steve Martin's also done a lot for the banjo in that way, but the Mumford guys seem to have spread the word among the younger musicians and music-lovers, in particular - and that's great, the way I see it.
Right now my old home-made banjo is on loan to someone who's teaching herself - Caroline Blundell - a new member here at the BHO. Caroline is already a fine finger-style guitar picker and singer who will no doubt pick up the Scruggs style pretty quickly. But she's also a teacher and I hope she'll spread the technique among her students!
And, Lo! What do I find in my little library - my old copy of "Earl Scruggs and the Five String Banjo" published in 1968 - the very same one that I used to teach myself. In fact, that book contains the very instructions I used as a guideline when I built that banjo! I think I'll loan that one to Caroline, along with the banjo...
