I am waiting for the Recording King Madison Deluxe that I ordered last Tuesday, from Janet Davis Music. They said it would take 7 days, so I am hoping to get it Monday or Tuesday. This is a big deal for me because I never had a real bluegrass banjo before. I played someone's Mastertone once, for about a minute. I was amazed at how loud it was, and I thought I have to get something like this. I didn't know the whole story about tone rings, and recently I read that what gives a bluegrass banjo its characteristic sound is mostly the sand cast brass tone ring.
Then I heard about the RK 35 on the BHO shopping forum and almost everyone had positive things to say about it. I decided it should be my next banjo, and now I feel like I am ready for it.
My current jamming banjo is a Goodtime Midnight Special, which I've had for 2 or 3 years. I love the way it sounds, but it isn't quite loud enough. It depends on the jam and how many other instruments there are, and what kind. It definitely will help my jamming to have more volume. Now I sometimes I have to play very hard in order to be heard.
So I am counting the days. If I ordered it last Tuesday morning, and they said about 7 days, does that mean I will probably get it tomorrow? Oh I really hope so.
And, aside from that, the jam today was really nice. I have been getting much better at jamming, and that makes me feel I am ready for my first serious banjo. I used to be afraid I would hit a wrong note or chord, so I didn't mind that my banjo isn't very loud. But I really am not very worried about that anymore. If I am not sure, I don't play, and now I can tell if am sure or not.
