Two Banjo Hangout Workshops For Beginners Coming Up on Sunday, September 25th!

Posted by bevans on Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Howdy folks,

Don't forget that I'll be hosting two (count 'em, two!) online workshops for beginning level bluegrass banjo players right here on the Banjo Hangout website on Sunday, September 25th. These workshops are ideal for players who are just about totally new to the instrument to those with two years of playing experience. Each session is $25 but you can be a part of both for the discounted price of $45 - that's four hours of instruction! Here's a full description of each session:

Bill Evans - "Bluegrass Banjo Basics" - Sept 25

Join Banjo For Dummies author and renowned teacher and player Bill Evans in a session designed for those just getting started with bluegrass banjo. Bill will cover body posture and holding the banjo, fitting the strap, tuning, fretting chords, fitting the finger picks on the right hand and developing a comfortable right hand picking position for speed and great tone. From there, Bill will show you how to play the basic Scruggs roll patterns and how to add spice to your playing with slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs. Tablature is emailed to you in advance and you can easily record the session for later use. The BHO group workshop format is interactive - you can type questions at any time during the session.

Bill Evans - "Bluegrass Banjo Back Up Basics" - Sept 25

You’ll have a lot more fun and progress more quickly with the banjo if you are comfortable playing with others in a bluegrass band or jam session. In this workshop, Banjo For Dummiesauthor and master teacher Bill Evans will show you everything you need to know to be a great team player. Bill will discuss bluegrass song structure and form and the relationship between the key of a song and the chords used to accompany it (you’ll also finally figure out what all that I-IV-V stuff is about too!). From there, Bill will show how to accompany songs with roll patterns and vamping patterns and how to use the capo to play in any key. You’ll even learn how to follow the guitar player in a jam session to accompany a song you’ve never heard before!

The BHO group workshop format allows you to record the audio and video for later use and you can ask questions as we proceed through the material. I'll email tabs and other materials to you a few hours before the start of the first session.

Both of these workshops are a great way to jump start your progress on the instrument and will focus on bluegrass/Scruggs fundamentals that you'll use to play solos as well as accompany others.

If you have any question on the workshop format or content, feel free to email me at I hope to see some of you new folks there!

All the best,

Bill Evans
