picking up the new banjo today

Posted by dustyhood on Friday, August 12, 2011

It has been a few weeks since i posted any updates. Still playing with the guys and gals at church. Happy to report i get to finally own a real nice instrument. I have a beautiful morgan monroe archtop, and i will most likely still play it the most. I am making thd arrangements to get a Stelling Golden Cross today. I know the instrument doesnt make the sound, rythum, or music its the player. I have always wondered if it is easier to player a quality instrument over a mass produced line instrument. I have gathered the reviews and found i prefer a Stelling. It is most common in our groups and blends with the other pickers well. I guess i have the keeping up with the jones syndrome going... But will see tonight....

Funny you should post this. I have a Stelling Staghorn-which I absolutely love! I decided that any serious player has to have two banjos, however, and my Huber Lexington just arrived. Totally different feel and sound than my Stelling...more like an old Gibson, but I love this one too. I started pickin' in '09, same as you, but I'm pretty devoted. I think these two will be enough for quite awhile...or it's marriage counseling for me :-) Good luck with your new purchase, and with your pickin'...I agree, by the way, that it pays to buy the best quality banjo you can, early on.
