National thumb picks - do they make an xs?

Posted by Mary Temple on Saturday, July 16, 2011

Is there such a thing as an extra small size National thumb pick?  I have a small and I love the pick but I have to tape it on so it won't move around at all; an XS would probably be perfect.   I've heard the Bluechips are great but can't spend $40+ on pick(s) right now.  I've searched the internet and can't seem to locate such an animal.  I may just have to save up and bite the bullet for the Bluechip but I do love that National; it's smooth and the fastest to play with and gives great tone to the strings.

Did you try to put your pick in a pot of boiling water and getting it really soft and then mold it to your thumb? I have done this with good results. Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions boys, I have indeed thought of that, however, it's such a good pick and works so well (except for having to use med tape) I don't want to risk screwing up the best thumb pick I have. So I guess this means there's no such thing as an XS that you know of either. I have a pick I'm going to take to a dental lab at work and see if I can form one of the other, not-so-good picks into the same shape and feel. If I get a good back up, I might try the hot water on the good National one.

Found out today from someone who got back to me fro Elderly Instruments in Grand Rapids that said National only makes one size, (Lg); that they used to make other sizes but only went to a small. At least it's nice to know; I do have a collectors item now.

Mary- The new Custom thumb pick by Saddle is a one size fits all. It fits a 12 year old child to a 250lb Guy. This pick is the biggest advancement in thumb picks in 50 years. Comfortable, with style and greater control than conventional picks. Check it out on the web.
