Other music. . .

Posted by MarkRough on Sunday, June 19, 2011

As an adult the first music I was involved with was Irish traditional stuff.  I spent several years trying out different instruments, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistle, accordion, bouzouki and finally settled on wooden flute.  I can still muddle through on tenor but for Irish purposes stick to flute and whistle (same fingerings).

I play as much as I can, but also co-host a local radio show focusing on Irish, Scottish, Breton and English folk and traditional music.  I usually cover the third Saturdays of each month but fill in other Saturdays when my colleagues can't make it in.  You all may know one of the other hosts, Kevin Donleavy, author of Strings Of Life: Conversations With Old Time Musicians.

The show is called Atlantic Weekly, Part II (Part I is earlier in the morning and focuses on American traditional and folk stuff) and is every Saturday from 10-noon East Coast time.  It's a pretty diverse station, rock, classical, jazz and folk.  Most of the folk is on weekends, but you never know what you'll hear when you tune in.  The station is WTJU 91.1 fm if you're local.  You can also listen on line, if you're inclined, at http://wtju.net/index.
