Playing with the Ultimate Accordionist

Posted by cnsayer on Tuesday, June 14, 2011

Charlie Giordano, known as a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, sat in with my band recently, and I was awed. He is incredible. He plays the best jazz/roots accordion I've ever heard in my life.  I love the banjo-accordion sound, and I've played with fine accordionists in the past, but this was a whole new level that I hadn't experienced before.  I was in heaven!   I invited Charlie to be on my next CD, and he agreed.  I'm excited -- he is exactly the kind of change I was looking for on my next CD, and a true inspiration.

I'm now starting to write the arrangements.  This process is usually a long road, but I'm hoping to have a lighter hand with it and leave it more open so that the preparation is not as consuming as it has been in the past.  That's the hope anyway.... I also like to let it unfold in whatever way feels right.  I've always found it a huge challenge to accomplish recording projects in my over-crammed life (which is why I do them infrequently).  But who knows, maybe it will sail through easier than before... I'll see what happens.  Either way, I'm just so glad to have met and played with Charlie, and am certainly looking forward to the next time.

I'm not so sure this combination is a good idea. You know accordion jokes are right up there with banjo jokes... Actually, I'll be looking for that cd!

Yeah, those banjo jokes & accordion jokes are all the more reason to make a CD with both!

I have 2 good friends who are both excellent accordionists. Playing with either and/or both of them is about as fun as it gets for me!

I agree with your passion for the banjo-accordion sound. I've been investigating the early Minstrel stroke style banjo paired with a brass reeded French accorodeon (aka flutina). Looking forward to hearing some of your project.

My wife plays accordeon and I must say.... we are a good pair: at our wedding party we played a couple of tunes on banjo and accordeon!
