If you go up to the "search" box on upper right of this page, you can type in Band in a Box and find several threads about this topic. The Cost at Janet Davis Music right now is $99. I think.

B in a Box is a good back up band, you have to enter in the cord progression and the instruments. I have had it sence it was on floppy disk. The question is do you want to play banjo or learn a new program. Band in a Box can be easy or real hard to use it depends on how far you want to go. Some people use it to learn songs and as a rhythm instrument. You can change speed without change pitch which is good for learning songs. But it will take time to learn to use it and you need something with some volumn to listen to it over the banjo. Best of luck Gary C

BIAB is a great learning/teaching tool. If you purchase it, just get the basic package -- you don't really need all the frills and they just cost money. After you purchase it, go to and download over 200 FREE backup songs (for bluegrass, not clawhammer). That'll get you started. It also has 5 "styles" which I like better than the Jethro style in BIAB.

You can use it to learn new songs or work on backup. You can play in any key and at any speed. I've had mine for many years and still use it daily for practice and work on new stuff.

I think you can purchase the basic package for less than $100. Look around, you might find it on sale., and I'm sure some of our other vendors have it.

Good luck!
