sing the melody and find the notes while singing. tabs won't sound like the song unless you know the song and do the timing. Best of luck

Hi Lou, Haven't heard from you for a while.

Gosh, What tgaryc said sounded like "Learning by ear" and "Improvising". Even Earl didn't play the same song the same way every time, so good luck on finding Tab that sounds exactly like a tune is played . I would venture to say that you can finds several tabs for every song that is popular. It's kinda like having aluminum, wood, steel or another material in a crutch. It's still a crutch.

If you cannot play a tune in time and at a reasonable speed it will not sound like what you hear another player play. Be patient and learn to walk for now. Running will come later. Happy picking. Augie

Hi Lou.I'm a beginner, but I have been learning Cripple Creek, I got the tabs from Rick McKeon's web site and having been learning it for 12mnths it is only now it is starting to sound like the song,The thing is when I go to the jam, they play it a different way, more complexed than mine.Geoff Howald another teacher on the internet has cd's accompanied by a book and each stage of his Cripple Creek he adds a new set of notes and speed, so you get better as you learn each measure.I am now learning this one which again is slightly different than the first one I ever learnt. The guys at the jam say that everyone seems to learn their own version of songs and as they get better with practice they adapt the tune accordingly.Hope this is of some help, although being a newbie I don't have the same experience as many here on the hangout.
One thing I am learning is to have fun while you pick, try all different ways of playing a tune and you'll soon find one your comfortable with and be amazed when it suddenly sounds like the tunes you have been listening too.
Good Luck and have lots of fun.Regards Trish

Learn it the way you want it to sound. Like everybody else says, alot of it you will pick up by ear. Just an example. I can play 'sweet home alabama'on guitar(sorry , not bluegrass) along with the record, fills and all. turn the sound off, play it again, record myself. and it sounds a bit different. Don't sweat that. All of our fingers are not the same length, we do not strike the strings with the same pressure. You know if you are playing it right or wrong. And more experience will render the results you are looking for.LikeTrish says, just have fun!

Hi Lou, Good to hear that you are working on Cripple Creek. You will never find tab that shows you exactly what Earl or anyone else plays, because all great banjo players improvise to make it sound good to their ear. They think in musical notes.

One could play exactly the same licks as someone else, but have a different sound because of the way they differ in technique. Pick a version and learn it to the point where you can hear the music when you play it. Singing along helps tremenduously.

Tab is like training wheels on a bicycle. At some point you will have to throw it aside. You can't corner very fast on the bike with training wheels because you will fall over. To go around the corner faster you're gonna have to lean into it and you can't do that with the outriggers on. If you learn by ear to start with, you don't have the training wheels to learn to ride without later on. Just a thought

Download this free software that allows you to view, hear, and print out thousands of tabs here on this site.
tabledit.com/tefview/download.shtml
There are 13+ complete 'cripple creek' tabs here on the archive. Once you download the software, click on a song of your choosing from the tab archive. You can play it, slow it down, loop it, isolate a portion to focus on, then take out the banjo track, keeping the other instruments, and you have your own backup band. What fun!

Hi people, Well, I am doing the song by ear. I got the first part down perfict, it is the middle rolling I am trying to achieve. I did get 2 versions of Cripple Creek on tab and you are right both do not sound like Scruggs... BUT I spent a good part of this past weekend and did come up with a decent middle roll. I wrote it down and am modifying it untill I think it sounds just right...
BUT WAIT... look at me now! if any of you remember, I just started learning in February. AND not even knowing if I would be able to play because of my spinal coard injury and right hand motor control problem... YES I won't ever be able to play fast but I am picking and grinnin! :-)
