head tension

How does tightening the head (from g to g#) effect the tone can it remove some of the brighter tones or is it my own head needs tensioning??

Generally speaking, tightening the head will brighten up the tone, while increasing volume. You can tone down the brightness with a heavier bridge, moving the tailpiece up and down, and experimenting with string guages.

try loosing the head a quarter of a turn. That should soften the tone some. Play farther away from the bridge, and play lighter. Some times people run there head to tight. I don't know about where you are from but here all the weather changes and the moisture changes effect the head and neck of the banjo. the tailpiece angle will also effect the volumne and tone. happy tinkering
