Little Darlin' Pal Of Mine

Posted by jeliyesil on Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Well, this seemed like a pretty basic tune to start Scruggs with, but I wanted to start basic.

I just got my "revised edition" Scruggs book, with various fixes, so I wouldn't be referring to incorrect tabs. I did put this tune on my Amazing Slow Downer from the Foggy Mt. Banjo album. I have to say that I don't hear that hammer-on on the second string (from open to fret 1) in measure 4, so I wonder if that's really there? And the setup to the fiddle break is not the one on my Foggy Mountain Banjo version, so I'm not sure where that came from. Other than that, the tab seems right.

This is one of the first tunes I learned, and I had remembered it fairly well, except for that backward roll in the 4th to last measure. My fingers really didn't want to do that, so I'm guessing I may have stopped using those backward rolls at some point during my playing. Caught again!

I had a hard time playing along with this because of the straight rhythm of his rolls. I'm more of a syncopated picker, and after working on Crowe, this was tough. But I finally got that going pretty well at about 50% speed. I started cranking up the speed, and when I got to about 83%, I realized these guys really cooked on this tune. I also had trouble matching right around the last 4 measures. I got out my metronome, and realized that they were speeding up on the last 4 measures. I clocked the rest of the breaks, and low and behold, they sped up on those measures on everyone's break. I couldn't tell who in the band was doing it. They took off even faster during the bass break, which I guess is pretty common. In any case, they started the tune at about 131 (!!!), and ended it around 139 (!!!!). That is fast picking, at least to me.

So my basic tune turned into yet another "not as easy as it sounds" lesson. A good tune to work on for building speed.

Hi Joan
Little Darling Pal Of Mine, is one of my favorite tunes, but I couldn't get it to that speed.
I like to listen to it not be blown away.
I know some tunes are nice slightly faster, but if you have someone that wants to sing he or she has to sing fast also.
I'll keep going at my speed.
