Well, not actually the 'first' gig. I did enter a talent contest a few years ago, during which the microphone was feeding back and the banjo kept sliding off my lap. Doom on me for not wearing a strap!
I also have to count all the gigs I played in my old Death Metal band from Sydney in the early nineties.
But it's the first time I've played banjo live with another musician. And it's this Friday at the Wellington Bluegrass Society, with Wayne Robinson, aka Banjo NZ. He's kindly offered to accompany me on guitar as we play a few standards: Spotted Pony, West Fork Gals and Fly Around. He was also the guy who was honest enough to tell me that my Scruggs style was pretty loose, but my clawhammer was not too shabby.
And so began my clawhammer journey. Hopefully the good folks at the WBS get something out of it, too. Might be the start of a regular thing. (If they let me back in)
I'm nervous, but you get that. Anyway, I'll video the gig and put it up here.
Here goes nothing!
