Hi all im teaching myself to play and so far have made progress but on sliding,do you put any pressure on the string and does this mean 2\4 start at second fret and slide down to the fourth?

Hi Glenn, When you are not fretting a string, not pressing it down against the neck, the strings vibrating length goes from the NUT, at the end of the neck, to the BRIDGE sitting on the head. When you put pressure on the string and you cause it to touch one of the frets, that effectively shortens it and changes the tone to a higher frequency or note.
When you slide, you put pressure just in front of the starting fret and slide your finger down to just in front of the last fret as in the notation ie. 2\4 2nd fret to 4th fret.
