I'll Stay Around

Posted by jeliyesil on Thursday, February 10, 2011

After a brief break with my kids home for snow days, school roof inspections and various viruses, I'm back to the project. I worked out Crowe's break to "I'll Stay Around" from Blackjack yesterday. It's very similar to "Somehow Tonight", with the same D lick in the middle, and that "double pulloff" lick that starts on the open 5th string, first string 3rd fret pulloff, open 2nd string, 3rd string, 3rd fret pulloff, open 1st string, open 3rd. I'm guessing these licks will show up in lots of other tunes of this tempo.

Next on my list of Crowe tunes are "Sledd Ridin'", "You Don't Know My Mind" and "Stepping Stone" (for backup and fills). I don't have those last two, but they are on YouTube. Anybody know if you can get an .mp3 from a YouTube video? I also want to do the backup for Ocean of Diamonds.

My next player will be Earl, so I'm saving some of the tunes that J.D. does in common with Earl for that. I'm going to compare their breaks to learn more about the difference in their styles.

If anyone has any suggestions about more Crowe tunes to take a look at, please email me.

p.s. Thanks to this month with J.D.,  my pulloffs are much stronger, not to mention my callouses!

Yep, that's one of the Crowe tunes I worked out for my project, too. Must revisit these, and get some recordings. I think this, Somehow Tonight, and You Don't Know My Mind were the only 3 I played with.

It's rather spooky to compare your list... :)

I await to see what you pick out for Fleck Month! And Vestal Month if that's on your list..?

Here is a link to a free download that will allow you to download an MP3 of a YouTube video (dvdvideosoft.com/). You have the option of downloading a specific program, such as the one you are interested in, or downloading the entire program that covers a lot of options.

Ive used this program for a long time and found it to quite satisfactory. Most of what I download is YouTube videos and occasionally MP3s. Im sure there are similar programs available as free downloads, but I didnt find any need to look beyond the one I've recommended above.

Thanks, I'll give that a try!

Hi Jer,
That is spooky... I guess we both like that bouncy playing that J.D. does on these medium paced tunes. That and his backup are the two things I like most about J.D. It's interesting that there aren't that many instrumentals associated with him. Maybe that's not his thing.
I'm interested to see what I'll pick for Fleck as well - it has to be attainable, so it may be tough. As far as Scott Vestal goes, he's not on my list, but if I have enough energy and time to keep going with this, I'm planning on a second bunch, and he'd definitely be on there. Sammy Shelor as well, and lots of others. I only hope I live long enough to get through all the players on my lists before too many more new amazing players start popping up! Is it my imagination, or are there just a lot more really good players out there than there used to be?
