Flatt and Scruggs Tribute Shows, NashVillians debut highlight February Concerts and Workshops

 Hi to all BHO Friends,

There's a lot going on in February - including two Flatt and Scruggs Tribute Concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area, the launch of a new progressive band, the NashVillians with James Nash of the Waybacks and a Banjo Hangout J. D. Crowe Banjo Style workshop. I hope you can join me for some of these events. Here's all you need to know:


Friday, February 11: San Francisco, CA: Bill performs with James Nash (The Waybacks), Jesse Cobb (The Infamous Stringdusters) and Bryan Home (Hot Buttered Rum) as The NashVillians, St. Cyrpian's Episcopal Church, 2097 Turk Street to kick off the 2011 San Francisco Bluegrass and Old Time Festival with Nell Robinson, John Reischman & The Jaybirds. Saturday, February 12: Mountain View, CA: Bill plays with the Flatt and Scruggs Tribute Band (Kathy Kallick, Del Williams, Larry Cohea, David Thom, Jim Mintun, Paul Shelasky and Markie Sanders) with OMGG opening, for the Redwood Bluegrass Associates. February 15: Berkeley, CA: Bill hosts a Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs & The Foggy Mountain Boys Tribute at the Freight and Salvage, 2020 Addison Street, as part of the 2011 San Francisco Bluegrass and Old Time Festival featuring Bill with Kathy Kallick, Del Williams, Tom Rozum, David Thom, Paul Shelasky, Larry Cohea, Jim Mintun, Markie Sanders, and Oak Grove, a family bluegrass band. February 17: Kensington, CA (near Berkeley/Albany): Bill hosts his first "Bangers & Grass" invitational session at the Kensington Circus Pub, 389 Colusa Ave., from 8 to 10 p.m. Admission is free but tips will be appreciated. Come and listen to Bill, Jim Nunally, Chad Manning, Tom Bekeny, and Steve Pottier play informal bluegrass while you enjoy the Circus Pub's English fare and great beers! February 20: Banjo Hangout Online Workshop "The Banjo Style of J. D. Crowe," 2 to 4 p.m. Pacific Time, $25. For intermediate to advanced students. Bill will teach three of J. D.s greatest solos, You Dont Know My Mind, The Old Home Place, and Blue Ridge Cabin Home along with a few of his most well-known signature licks, with the goal of uncovering the unique elements of J. D.s style. Topics will also include a discussion of J. D.s right hand choices, his approach to rhythm and the elements of playing with drive. Tabs provided for all examples and you can record the audio and video for late use. Bill is the co-author of the only authorized J. D. Crowe tab book on the market and has worked with J. February 24-27: Petaluma, CA: Bill teaches the advanced bluegrass banjo class at the California Bluegrass Association Winter Music Camp, Walker Creek Ranch.
