Evaluation and first lesson

Posted by leastbest on Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Sunday night I had my first lesson.

Before I talk about my evaluation/lesson I'd like to talk about getting there.

I was raised by an agoraphobic and have never ventured far from home.  It's funny because I'm a UPS driver and drive 150 miles a day without going anywhere.  I've been on the same route delivering Sheffield Lake, Ohio and the whole town is only 3 miles wide and a half mile deep.  Of that, I only deliver half.

I met Ron here on the Banjo Hangout and set up the lesson.  Even though his place was only a 30 minute drive from my house it meant driving through numerous small towns such as Erhart, Lester and Mallet Creek.  Of course I got lost and had to call him (I love cell phones).

Meeting Ron was like seeing an old friend.  He examined my banjo and said it was fine (although I should get lighter strings, a new bridge and put in some spikes).  Then I showed him the little that I knew and he seemed relieved that I had good clawhammer form (i.e. I could do a Bum Ditty).  I got the basic form thanks to Patrick Costello.  So far I haven't picked up any bad habits.

Ron picked some tunes and sang some.  I could have just sat and listened all night.  There is something so authentic about this style of music, no artifice.

He gave me some work to do for my next lesson and the hour was up before I knew it.

I'm excited.  I can do this!

Just wanted to say thanks for the comment on Soldiers Joy. Couldn't find an email address so I left you a comment here. Hope the lessons go well and you post some tunes soon.
