8 weeks into learning banjo today. I'm not very proud of this week's upload:

I've taken note of comments on the forum and have been practising slower with more with an emphasis on clarity and I was quite pleased with results. But I just started on YCTYB Lesson Wabash Cannonball and that is so rough I can't record it yet so I've fallen back to FMB. I managed 125bpm last week and just couldn't resist trying to push it to 140bpm. I shouldn't have - way beyond my limits and it sounds pretty bad. The chaps at the local park jam seem to whizz though it much faster (I know I taped them and timed it). Ah well..

You should pat yourself on the back, Patrick ! How you can call yourself 'just startin' is beyond me. I have been playing ( if you can call it that ) 8 months.... and I am still on Boil them cabbages down. At this rate, this time next year, you will be able to call yourself a novice !

Keep at it Patrick! I've just picked up after many years! Oh, but me, I just had to try Cripple Creek! I don't have a teacher, but I do have a wonderful DVD by Greg Cahill. So, I follow that, & I played very slowly to start with! I'm finally almost up to the correct speed, And I've been at it for 2 months! I don't get to practice much, but love it when I do! I'm also trying Under the Double Eagle, and Grandfathers Clock!
Some day I may be as good as some of the others! But, I'm living a dream, learning to play Bluegrass music!
Good Luck to Ya!

Hi Patrick, You're getting a superb sound out of that banjo! Well done. And for 8 weeks playing - incredible! I would say though, you should play it slow for a little while till you get over some stumbling blocks. There's a forward-backward roll in the Em part that I can hear you skipping over there. You sort that out, and you're onto something! I'm very impressed, JJ
