It's November 2010. Boy the year has flown by. I've been on an extended vacation from work and am due to go back next week. As well as getting a whole wack of things done around the house:maintenance issues mostly, I have had the opportunity to watch almost all the baseball playoffs on TBS or FOX. Congratulations to the Giants, though I bet on the Rangers with my wife. Another dinner I get to pay for!
I have had an extended banjo practice almost every day as well. It's been terrific! My tired old fingers have woken up. And my playing has become more consistent and ... well... musical! I am improvising licks and my transitions from breaks to breaks are smoother. And licks that I haven't been able to play accurately ... ever, are now gettin' played with consistency. I am not a professional. The likes of Chris Quinn, with the Foggy Hogtown Boys will always be my mentor. His playing is a pleasure to my ears and my eyes. He makes it look effortless. I know it's not. I'm now into my 6th year of playing banjo and am just reaching the point where I am developing my own style. It's not a great style, but it's mine.
The old saying is appropriate here: "I don't play like Earl, but Earl don't play like me".
I hope to continue to practice every day when I get back to work next week. It's good for my soul.
