http://joebanjoburke.org/index.htmlThis past weekend I was all over NY state, first to Buffalo, then Niagara Falls, then to Rochester(Buffalo and Rochester to pick up items bought on Ebay, Niagara Falls on general principle just for being in the area), then on to East Durham in the Greene County Catskills, (the Irish Alps) to attend and participate in the fourth annual "Joe Banjo Burke" Festival, honoring the memory of New Yorks greatest Irish Tenor Banjo player Joe Burke of Johnstown, County Kilkenny Ireland. Besides playing banjo, he was a wonderful singer of songs, teller of tales, athlete, and overall nice guy. This was/is a not-for-profit festival that raises money for Parkinson's disease reseach/awareness.....it was a great time, and a great honor to be a part of(for the third time-I couldn't make it last year). If you go to the site, I am listed as "TBA" LOL!! I had a great time at Stack's playing with the Jamieson Sisters(Terry Kane and Ellen Tepper-they are really great!), and visiting with old friends John Nolan, Felix Dolan, Pat Kane, Joe's widow Bridget Burke, and many others. There was a wonderful tenor banjo player named Pauline Conneely, she is worth seeing!(hearing, I guess!) I also met a guy whose name eludes me right now who had a Bacon Silver Bell Serenader that was beautiful! And he had a great story to go along with it.....!
When you get a chance, look up Banjo Burke, and check out his recordings, he was really special musician, and a really special human being.
