Yesterday was the annual Bost family reunion in Newton, NC so I drove up there from South Carolina. Near the end, after many folks had already left, I got to pick and sing a few songs with my cousin's husband, Jim Dempsey (jimbowe on Banjo Hangout) from Richmond, VA. It was the first time that we had gotten to play together. Two banjos. We sang and played a couple bluegrass numbers and a couple hymns. We did great staying together even though we knew slightly different versions of some of the songs. The crowd seemed to enjoy it. I know that I did.
The photo that jimbowe uses for his ID is of our Bost ancestors playing their instruments, and was taken around 1902. The banjo player in the photo is his wife's grandfather, Will Bost. The family still has his banjo. The man in the photo is Pink Bost, my grandfather's uncle, and the boys are his sons. One of them was my grandfather's best friend and the two of them played in a string band up until Grandpapa started raising a family.
