Yup, my kids tell me I'm now officially 'old' - I hit 40 this week. It don't make no nevermind to me - it's just another birthday really and I had my mid-life crisis at 21 so I reckon I'll be okay!
Had some fine travelling this summer - a week in the far south of Brittany, a week in the far west of Brittany and a week in Cornwall. I taught my son the joys of British Railway travel (via South Wales oddly), we bought a ma-hoosive tent for our future camping pleasure, and I'm still waiting for the £4000 my employer owes me (just the 3 and half years on...).
On the plus side the people I've met and been in close proximity to on holiday have all had to listen to my Banjo (have banjo, will travel) and there really haven't been any complaints - just lots of '...was that you? I thought it was a CD and that you were hillbillies, but you're obviously a musician..'
A musician, eh? I like that description! In some part I'd like to believe that it's an accurate description - I play a musical instrument, so it ought to be. I don't think I'm as proficient as I'd like to be, or know enough tunes to constitute an encyclopaedic knowledge, but I can play some tunes, that people recognise, and enjoy listening to me play. So I guess, musician it is!
I do owe a large part of any progress in the last 12 months to the good folks on here, and to their gentle cajoling to '..listen to this...try it like this...here's an mp3 of me playing it slowly...have you heard it played like this...' Without that kind of help and encouragement, it was always going to be an uphill struggle. So thank you, all of you, for making learning the banjo fun, and as a by-product, making me a musician.
So I'm paying that forwards now - a friend of mine has decided that the banjo is for him. So I find myself writing out lots of little lessons in TAB, and writing down by 'easy' tunes in TAB, and meeting up with him to listen to him play and suggest things such as; listen to this...try it like this....etc. I guess what goes around really does come around.
Now, about that four grand you owe me guv'nor....
