My weapon of choice, so to speak, on this journey to learn the banjo is an open back Deering "GoodTime" model, 5 string banjo! I had looked at a number of banjos on-line as well as asked for some advice from the good (and more experienced) folks on this web site. It seemed as though the "Goodtime" open-back banjo would be the wisest choice for someone such as myself who was just getting his feet wet in the proverbial waters of musical discovery. I was impressed by its simple yet attractive design as well as the fact that it is very light! I have some experience playing accoustic guitar and I was somewhat expecting a heavier instrument to be had. Wow! I like the fact that I can pick it up with one hand so easily and, of course, can thereby find NO excuse NOT to have it nearby and on-hand whenever I find the time to play! Of course, in all honesty, if the good folks at the Deering Banjo Company ever hear ME play one of their fine instruments they might pay ME to send it back to them! LOL! I just hope I don't become known as the guy who put the real "BUM" in the "ditty" ! :)
I just downloaded a fine looking set of lessons called "Getting Started on the 5 String Banjo", by David Holt. I found this on the Homespun web site and, so far they look very promising.
I'll keep you all posted as to my continued adventures...
Best to you all folks!!
Tom
