Why I play clawhammer banjo

Posted by clawfootcurt on Friday, April 6, 2007

In the early spring of last year, I decided I wanted to play the banjo as it seemed that it was such a cool sound and a fun sounding instrument.  It also seemed that banjo players were always having fun.  So I set about investigating banjo playing/purchasing, as I neither had acces to a banjo, nor have I ever played any instrument.  Well, as you might imagine, I was in for quite a surprise to find out that there are different types of banjos and different ways to play them and some banjos were better suited to some playing etc..

There isn't much choice musically in my little town, so I decided to check out a couple of other places within about an hours drive that I found out, via the internet, sell banjos.   I visited Goldenring Music in Manitowoc, WI where I met Fritz and Mary Schuler.  Fritz set right about showing me the different open-backed banjos and how each of them sounded, as I had indicated to him that I was thinking about playing old timey type stuff.  I walked out with the one in my picture along with Wayne Erbsen's Clawhammer Ignoramus book (which Fritz has endorsed on the back cover, about half-way down)

I have played every day since then, (except one when I was travelling) and I also took lessons from Fritz last fall.  I have enjoyed playing immensly, and I hope I haven't driven too many of my family and freinds crazy with my practicing.  I feel like I am a decent player right now, and even if I'm not, I am sure enjoying it anyway.   I am looking forward to learning how to play with others, and continuing to learn to play better.
