New Very Loud and Bright Banjo Tone Amp Mounting Method

Posted by yellowdog on Thursday, July 22, 2010

I play an Irish tuned (GDAE) short neck, open back tenor banjo in an Irish session in a local Irish pub every Wednesday night, including last night.  And last night the place was packed and noisy and my little banjo, even with its Banjo Tone Amp, simply wasn't up to the task.   I needed a lot more volume and a brighter timbre because of the crowd noise.

On a hunch I reached in my banjo case, pulled out a roll of Scotch brand transparent tape, which is an excellent conductor of sound surface waves, and ran a short strip of it between one of the two coordinator rods and the braided cord which is part of the Banjo Tone Amp.  The volume and brightness of the banjo went up immediately and it also had a very nice sound.

After I played a tune I turned the banjo around and ran a second strip of tape between the cord and the other coordinator rod, and just as I suspected the volume and brightness of the sound went up again, and the sound was also very pleasant.

So this morning I woke up and went to work trying to improve this new improvised mounting method.  I came up with a design that worked even better,  so I made a drawing and wrote it up in a blog entry on the "Blog" page of my website (link at left)..  There is also a photo of the drawing, as well as a brief description, on my photos page here.  This new mounting method is amazing because it can make a very simple and inexpensive banjo sound as loud and brilliant as a very expensive banjo.  I can hardly wait to play it at our Irish session next Wednesday night.  I hope that the pub is packed and that they are even noisier than the bunch last night.  They won't stand a chance against this new wonderful discovery made last night and early this morning - even before a cup of coffee!

i hope that you read the blog entry on the website that explains how I think it works.
