Recording blues

Posted by pcfive on Saturday, June 26, 2010

I record myself about once a week. It is usually a real discouraging experience. I think I'm getting so good and then recording day comes around and well I guess not. Sometimes the recordings aren't all that bad, but not bad is not the same as good. I never feel they are really good.

Maybe it's because I expect more of myself now than I did a while back? Maybe i have higher standards now? Either that, or I am just not getting any better!

Well I'm sure I am getting better. But slowly. And as I get better I expect more. I hear every little imperfection, and maybe I didn't hear them so much before.

Recording always brings me right down to earth and I realize it will take a lot longer before I can play this thing.

I never understand why people cover their ears and run away screaming when I show up with a banjo. But each week on recording day, I am reminded.

I have the same experience. I'm not as good as I think I am. But if you listen to other "professional" recordings, you'll notice that only the great ones are all that consistent and even. I can't remember who Kentucky Thunder has playing banjo right now, but I haven't heard anyone that good in a long time. Doesn't miss a note and his timing is immaculate.

Yes it probably takes many years to be "perfect." I recorded myself today and it sounded better than yesterday. I think what happens is during the week I get a little careless. It's hard to hear all the imperfections while playing along with recordings. Then after I record myself, usually on the weekend, I start to be more careful.

Other factors could also be involved, like my primitive recording set up. Or the fact that my banjo didn't cost $10,000.
