I met Mrs Benson when she was with Larry Stephanson band couple years ago. During her set she had played "Just Because", a nice medium-tempo tune that she whipped out so fast it sounded like one long note. After her set I asked her if she played everything she knew at 90 miles/hour. She claimed, "Oh, I like slow songs" but I have yet to hear her play anything slow enough so I can recognize the tune. Maybe my hearing apparatus has slowed down with age. I'm thinking it could be just a defense mechanism after hearing so much jazz/rock/fusion that has messed up the good stuff. I think Bela Fleck and Tony Trischka have each contributed to increasing the average speed of a bluegrass song by 75 bpm.
